This painting belongs to a tradition of finely executed copies after celebrated Old Master works produced for travelers visiting Italy during the Grand Tour. Raphael’s " Madonna della Seggiola ", housed in Florence’s Palazzo Pitti, was among the most admired and frequently reproduced images of the period. Such works allowed travelers to bring home a carefully painted reminder of the masterpieces they encountered abroad.

Understanding the Painting:

Based on Raphael’s celebrated " Madonna della Seggiola ", this painting centers on the tender bond between the Virgin and Christ Child. Mary draws the child closely into her arms, forming a compact, circular embrace that conveys both maternal warmth and quiet protectiveness. At the right, the young Saint John the Baptist joins his hands in reverence, recognizing Christ’s sacred identity. The composition brings divine figures into an intimate, human moment, while its circular format and elaborate gilded frame give the work the character of a precious devotional object.
