Lance Cattermole (1898-1992) was an Irish-born British painter, illustrator, and poster artist known for his accomplished work in oils and watercolor. Born into an artistic family, he was the son of artist Sydney Cattermole and grandson of George Cattermole (1800-1868), the celebrated illustrator of works by Charles Dickens.
As a young man, Cattermole spent time in Canada and served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force on the Western Front during the First World War, participating in the Battle of Flers-Courcelette on the Somme in 1916. After the war, he pursued formal artistic training at the Central School of Arts and Crafts (1922-23) and the Slade School of Fine Art (1923-26).
Cattermole developed a varied career encompassing landscape and figure painting, military subjects, commercial illustration, and poster design. He produced designs for John Player & Sons’ " Military Uniforms of the British Empire Overseas " series and created notable travel posters for British Railways, particularly promoting destinations in Scotland. He exhibited with organizations including the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and Royal Society of British Artists, and became a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1938. His work is represented in numerous museum and institutional collections.
