Alan Wolton, born in England in 1934 and raised in South Africa, settled in the American Southwest in 1982. A self-described outdoorsman, he spends significant time exploring landscapes and cityscapes along the US coast, traveling to new locations, and revisiting Europe. He paints each canvas in a concentrated burst of energy, working only after his emotional response to the setting has formed a clear mental image of the finished work.

Wolton’s study of light, particularly bright sunlight, led him to develop distinctive techniques for capturing the emotional vibrance of nature, whether in the subtlety of a floral subject or the intensity of a crashing ocean wave.
