Born in Germany in 1856, Buchner had a passion for painting from an early age. It is likely that he studied in Paris, although he spent the majority of his life in Munich. Buchner, along with notable contemporaries such as Reggianini, Ricci, and Soulacroix, focused on depicting the opulence of the previous century. Taste and elegance were central themes in the pictorial reinterpretation of the era, and conversation pieces like this example served as an ideal means to showcase elegant figures in sumptuous surroundings. In this painting, Buchner focuses on the rich textures of the lady's dress, upholstery, and wall coverings. The furniture is shown in all its splendor, and the playful pose of the young lady is both alluring and captivating.
